  1. The idea works on the observation that volume which has been sitting in the depth for some time ('old' volume) will tend to attract the price towards it, especially if it is large.  Conversely, 'new' volume tends to 'push' the price away from it.  If the new volume is added to the top 3 bid lines, the price appreciates, but only if the amount of volume added to the top 3 ask lines is not also increasing.  And vice versa.

  2. Jerry,

Some software I've trialled shows a ratio of the new volume added to the depth in the last x minutes (where x = 1-30 minutes).  It's a reliable way to find turning points for fast moving spec stocks.  Volume sitting in the depth which was added > x minutes ago is not counted.

One would query only the top 3 lines of depth (bid and ask), and sum how much new volume has been added on each side in the time frame chosen.  Then represent that as a ratio.

eg.    5 min NewVol ratio  = 2:1  would tend to be very bullish for the next 5 minutes of trading

15 min NewVol ratio  = 1:2  would tend to be very bearish for the next 15 minutes of trading

Thanks for all your fantastic work.  Best software ever!

[edit] - might even work better as an alert type.  Similar to % move in last x minutes.

  3. Thank you.  Unfortunately for Aussie stocks, Yahoo and Google have very poor quality data.  Tradingroom is by far the best but still can have issues.

One of my brokers Belldirect has downloadable historical data, both for the whole market and for individual stocks (metastock format).  Could that be used to backfill?

  4. Ok I can upgrade my PC's RAM - would 8 GB be ok?

What about processor - does that influence things as much as memory?

Currently using Etrade AU or BellDirect AU.  You have mentioned Bell is slow, but Etrade seems to be about the same speed.

  5. Hi Jerry,

I'm finding it takes a long time to fill data on the portfolio page.  Currently I have 800 stocks and I know that's a lot for MT, but that's what I need to do.

-- Is speed mainly a function of the chosen data source?

-- What other factors affect speed?

-- How long should it take to fill 800 symbols with a good broadband connection, dual core processor and 2GB RAM?

-- How long should it take for IB as the source to do the same?

    Thanks.

  6. I had some ideas about alerts:

    1) Would be nice to be able to import a bunch of stocks with corresponding alerts from a spreadsheet, similar to the way QT used to.

    2) With global alerts, will we be able to set eg. 3 conditions and have it trigger only when all 3 conditions are met?

    Thanks.

  7. Jerry, the reason I ask is that $ turnover is crucially important for anyone using MT to scan the entire stock market for trading opportunities.

It acts as a way of filtering out hundreds of small and microcap stocks with insufficient liquidity.  Such stocks cannot be removed from the ticker list because one day they might enjoy massive turnover.  I love using MT column sort to find "% gainers/losers with $ turnover".  Like a watchscreen.  Being able to know the previous day's $ turnover and comparing that with today's (intraday) gives insight into the strength of a move.

I'm just saying why it would be handy for day traders of stocks.

    Love your work.

    Regards.

    Hi Jerry,

Can we have a column called "$ turnover" please?

    ie. (Volume * last)   or (volume * (L+ (H-L)/2).

I'd also like "previous $ turnover", ie. (previous close * previous volume) and "previous chng %"

    Thank you.

  9. Great.  I look forward to using AB with MT.

    I use 2 day ROC quite a bit.    ((today's last/close) - (close from 2 day's previous)) / (close from 2 day's previous)*100%

Excel manages such things ok, but I'd much prefer the layout and other features of MT.

    Thanks again.
